Daakye Community Impact Foundation

There are many experiences I could describe, but I think my experience to date with this vision for which I am seeking support will serve to illustrate my experience and personal skills related to leading and making a difference. The story of Garden of Hope Community School, Apese began about six years BEFORE THE START OF THE PROJECT IN 2011/12 (ago), when my wife and I leased a few acres of land for a mango plantation in Apese. In the course of clearing the land, the noise of the heavy-duty equipment hired for the purpose drew the children of the community to watch. I spent many years of my childhood in a rural farming community in Huni valley, Western region, myself.

I took the opportunity to talk to the children about their education and why at that time of the day they were not in school. To my surprise, I discovered that most of them had never been to school. Talking more about education and their dreams, many of them wanted to become doctors, lawyers, teachers etc.

They had dreams and yet none of these children were in school. As a pastor, I began praying about how to help these children get education. IN ABOUT 2011/12 (About a year ago), I had the opportunity to share the vision with the Garden prayer team, which comprises six retired women in the US. Immediately, they all agreed to support such a project.

They contributed about US$1,000.00 as their seed money. With this money, we got workers to start the construction of the first shed for a classroom. I used to work as a construction supervisor before I became a pastor and I supervised the work myself to cut down labour costs, and make the little available go as far as possible. I continued talking to friends and relatives who might be able to help, and managed to get additional donations to complete construction of the INITIAL (current) two room classroom block where the children (have) started learning to read and write, and also ensure the salary of two teachers for one year. I also mobilized the parents and the community to be a part of this process.

Daakye Community impact foundation

The vision is to develop together with the community, a model system of non governmental Community owned and supported schools that are able to bring high quality education within walking distance of under privileged children like those in Apese.

We think if this model works it holds potential for poor under served rural areas as well as urban slums beyond Apese. The vision is to provide education of a high enough quality to help the community to develop and the children to progress through to higher education.
